9. Is the Feeder Included with the Sorter?
Resec Systems does not provide vibratory feed equipment. The reason is that this is not our area of expertise, and there is an abundance of vendors that can better serve your needs. We recommend a local vendor for the feeder as some adjustments down the line are usually required. Also, you may need additional feeders for new parts, etc.
Two feeder vendors that our customers are very satisfied with are:
FMC Technlogies / Syntron Feeders (national)
Automation Devices, Inc (Fairview, PA)

10. Should I use my own Computer to run the Sorter?
ShadowGage sorters are extremely reliable, with virtually no failures to date. The computer is the one component that typically fails. We feel that our customers are better served by installing a computer that their own IT personnel are familiar with and can maintain more efficiently.
It’s extremely easy to install ShadowGage on your computer. However if you prefer, Resec Systems will install the software for you and deliver a turnkey system at no added cost.
If you prefer, Resec Systems can also supply the computer with the sorter.

11. How Reliable are your Sorters?
ShadowGage sorters are extremely reliable. The only moving parts are a small motor, the platen bearing, and the air eject solenoid.
There have been no failures of the cameras, lamps or platen controller card to date.
There has been 1 instance of a motor and 1 instance of a bearing that required replacement.

12. What Maintenance is Required?
The basic maintenance for our sorters is keeping the glass platen and optical surfaces clean. Our customers report that the entire cleaning procedure takes under 5 minutes on average.
13. How Often does the Platen Need Replacement?
The platen requires replacement when it breaks or it’s surface is severely scratched. The majority of our customers have not yet replaced a platen, however some have replaced it several times. Most parts are made of materials that are softer than glass and therefore do not scratch the surface. Controlling contaminants such as debris from deburring or sanding media extends the life of the platen.
14. How do I Calibrate the Unit?
Every unit is calibrated at the factory prior to shipment and should be ready for use when you receive it.
The calibration of the unit can be readily checked by measuring a class-x precision pin. If re-calibration is required, the ShadowGage software includes a built in Calibration utility. You can calibrate the system using two NIST traceable class-x (or better) precision pins, typically 1.0000″ and 0.2500″

15. How Long does it take to Program a New Part?
It takes about 2 hours to follow the Walkthrough included in the Help system and create your first inspection program.
After you master the simple programming procedures, it takes about 30 seconds to program a single measurement. If your part requires 10 measurements, it will take about 300 seconds, or 5 minutes, to create an inspection program.

16. How Long does it take to Switch Parts?
Once an inspection program is created and stored, ShadowGage sorters can be switched to inspect a different part in under 2 minutes.
17. Can the Sorter Detect Chips or Surface Defects?
ShadowGage sorters make measurements on an image created by the projection (shadow) of your part. Because of this, it cannot inspect for surface defects directly. If the chip is located in a place where it can be seen in the projected image, for example inside a through hole, then it can be detected.
The sorter includes a hardware interface capable of triggering an external vision system, programmed to detect such defects, and incorporating the results in the overall decision to accept or reject the part.

18. Can the Sorter Measure Internal Dimensions?

19. Can the Sorter Check Internal Threads?
ShadowGage sorters offer an optional retro-reflective sensor to check for the presence or absence of an internal thread.
